There are about a million New Yorkers employed in the city’s television and film industry, which annually contributes about $5 billion to the Big Apple’s economy. The city is also home to three of the country’s giant television networks, NBC, CBS, and ABC.

Cable television channels have also found their ways to set up their office in New York. Some of these are Fox News, MTV, Comedy Central, and HBO. Silver Cup Studios, which is known to have produced hit television series like The Sopranos and Sex and the City is also based in the city, specifically in Queens. The Late Show with David Letterman is housed in New York’s Ed Sullivan Theater, while Saturday Night Live is broadcasted from the studio of NBC located at the 30 Rockefeller Center, the same place where The Today Show, NBC Nightly News, and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon are taped.

In 2005, the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theater and Broadcasting has reported over 100 returning and new television shows taped in the city.

PBS programming in New York is mainly provided by WNET, which is also the city’s largest public television station.

It is made up of a group of cable TV channels as well as Government-access television broadcast, also referred to as GATV.
